How do I know if I need new golf clubs?
Curious about my golf clubs. I bought irons about 12 years ago (Cobra) and I hit them well, no problems. But do they have a shelve life? Or is it by feel? They are not dinged up (I played very sparingly for a few years).
Also, my fairway woods are handme downs from Dad. Taylor Made burners with the bubble shafts. Do Titanium clubs have a different lifetime than irons? How do you know?
Clubs, if cared for, don’t have a shelf life. Grooves will wear out, but you can easily have them regrooved. Shafts should be changed, as they can tend to rust on the inside (usually about 5 years or so, depending on care) and grips should be changed at least yearly.
If you have a very sound, repeatable swing that constantly finds the center of the clubface, you can play whatever size driver head you want. If you don’t and you’re gaming one that’s <400cc's, you might want to get one that is (most are at least 430cc). The added forgiveness on miss-hits will be noticeable. Same can be said for FWs... 3w heads are generally 160-190cc, again, for more forgiveness.
Drivers and FWs also don't have a shelf life, if cared for. If something feels "dead" inside, that's an indication that a rib or other suport structure is broken inside the head. Titanium is one of the harder metals available. It doesn't "die", or change it's molecular structure by just sitting there (though some people use it as an excuse to buy something new). You find a rock or a tree root (or have a swing speed of more than 125mph)- that can do it, but not by proper care and normal use.
